The show opens on Friday, 10 May, with a reception from 6:30-8:30 PM, featuring a performance by renowned local musician Katharine Whalen at 7:00 PM. Opening reception, with a 7:00 PM performance by Katharine Whalen featuring songs from her soon-to-be-released EP, The Green Stag.
The Ackland Museum Store is pleased to announce the opening of Steamworks: Art, Stories, & Adornments, an exploration of the thematic genre of Steampunk. Loosely defined, Steampunk is the Steam Age (late 17th century – early 20th century) with its modern and never-before-seen technologies reimagined. Its influence is found in everything from literature to film and from fashion to art and music. Steamworks will present artists working in a variety of media, including textiles, metals, insects, paper, and the written word.
Steamworksfeatures retro-inspired hats and fascinators by Katharine Whalen; intricate, mechanized insect sculptures and photographs by Mike Libby of InsectLab Studio; whimsical originals and prints by collage artist Ramona Szczerba; and fantastical watercolor illustrations by Polish artist Elwira Pawlikowska. Adornmentsin the show include clever jewelry and elegant crowns by local artist Madelyn Smoak, charming tatted jewelry by Pamela Quevado, and unique leather masks by Tom Banwell. The Clockwork Dark books, an epic fantasy trilogy by 2013 Piedmont Laureate John Claude Bemis, will also be available.
