Artist Statement:  Pat has long been both a visual artist and a writer. In the 1960s-80s her artwork was exhibited in Southeastern U.S. galleries and museums, including major juried shows at the Virginia Museum; the Charlotte, NC, Mint Museum of Art; the Athens, GA, Lyndon House Art Center; and Southern Sculpture, a seven-state traveling exhibit. She has also shown her work in the Mexican town of San Miguel de Allende. Pat has had one-woman shows in Virginia and Mexico, and her awards include a national prize from MacWorld magazine for computer art.

Although Pat has worked in many visual media, in recent years she has turned to the warm, organic qualities of natural fibers, paper, and stones. Using some of the same stitches used by traditional lace makers, she creates structures much like those she once did in metal.

She says—The fibers seem more alive. Although I’ve made paintings and prints, most of my work tends to get three-dimensional. I think that makes me more immediately aware of the artwork as a thing itself, rather than a representation. All art, however, is the creation of something that wasn’t there before. So is writing. I’m drawn to the creative experience—that act of discovery that can change everything.

Special hours for 2nd Friday ARTWALK . 6-9 pm. Galleries are open to the public during regular business hours for the buildings.
