Chrystal Hardt

Artist Bio

Chrystal Hardt is a visual artist with twenty-five years of experience painting and exploring the world through visual media.  She lives with her husband and dog in her hometown of Roxboro.

Her paintings are explorations of life through abstract relationships of light and dark, color, mystery and emotion. They strive to strike a balance between the figurative and the abstract. They evolve through the process of painting.

Ms. Hardt has been exhibiting her work since her first solo show in Hillsborough in 1991. Her work has been accepted for inclusion in two Durham Art Guild Juried shows, once for her painting entitled, "At Night the Creatures Come Out to Play" and later for her sculpture, "Radiating Feminine" selected by juror, Judy Chicago.  She received “Best In Show” during Artfest at Roxboro's Kirby Gallery, 2010.

Her art education involved course work in studio classes and art history at UNCG and many local art classes at the Durham Arts Council and The Art Center in Carrboro.  Two major influences have been studies of the figure with artist Cong Yuan and annual artist retreats with Jane Filer.

In addition to practicing art Ms. Hardt taught art appreciation at PCC for several years and spent ten summers as an art instructor at the DAC.  She is a charter member and former president of the Art Guild of Person and is a member of the Durham Art Guild.  She has been actively engaged in bringing the arts to Person County since relocating from Chapel Hill in 1996.

She opened Milton Studio Art Gallery with fellow artists, Shirley Cadmus and Mimi Games in 2007 having outgrown her home studio.  Having a public studio helped push her work out into the world and offered opportunities to get to know other artists and art lovers.
