Cinc Hayes Bio
I began using mixed media over 30 years ago as a way to express disparate ideas collectively and portray them on a single piece of canvas. Since then, I have been able to merge images gathered from many years of traveling with the people and places I have encountered to tell a story on that piece of canvas.
The process begins with assorted concepts before evolving to a unified theme. My goal in a world based on fast responses and quick glances, that a person looking at my art will take a split second longer than normal to focus, stop and a realize that hidden within that piece is more to consider. Perhaps if they look a second, or a third time, they will see images they didn’t recognize with the first glance. I want them to get lost for a moment and use their creativity as if they were examining a puzzle and need to arrange the pieces.
I often release the creative aspects of my mind in my tiny haunted carriage house in downtown Charleston. It is an inspiring place to live that provides endless possibilities to include on my canvas. I might see an interesting character on the historic streets when I walk my Labrador. Or, I might see a porpoise frolicing near my kayak as I explore the nearby waters. Thereafter, I often cannot wait to paint these images on a piece of canvas, in hopes that one day they might be seen and appreciated.
