Conversations in Clay presents utilitarian and decorative pieces by three potters—Deborah Harris, Gillian Parke, and Evelyn Ward—who have learned, taught, and worked together for over 10 years. During this time, their generous sharing of ideas, materials, and techniques has enriched their lives creatively and personally. The three have shown their work together since 2011.

Deborah Harris is a full time studio potter in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has taught pottery at Claymakers in Durham for over ten years and has exhibited her work widely on the East Coast. Inspired by her travels through India, China, and Japan, Deborah specializes in functional porcelain tableware, often finished with a traditional Chinese celadon glaze.

Gillian Parke’s pottery explores the fusion of rough and fine textures and surfaces into complete works. Her inclusion of feldspar in porcelain, her use of open-stock decals, and her metallic lusters contribute to her award-winning pottery. Parke’s work has been published widely and she was the featured cover artist in the February 2009 issue of Ceramics Monthly Magazine.

Evelyn Ward is a full time studio potter and instructor whose work has been shown throughout North Carolina. Her passion is creating functional pottery with interesting surface textures created through the use of salt firing. Evelyn often employs the technique ofsgraffito, where she uses a sharp blade to remove parts of an applied glaze to reveal the ground material underneath.
