Barry Udis at Century Center
Century Center: Come and enjoy the photographs on display by Barry Udis. Mr Udis states,” From the moment I first started taking photos, on the college student European whirlwind trip, I have been interested in combining the beauty of the scene being shot with an usual way of presenting it. For me a photo captures my attention if it displays beauty in an unusual way or the context makes a statement, but also has an aesthetic quality that would make someone enjoy the vision while being provocative in some way.
Now that I am retired from UNC, I have time to find all the many spots where there is so much beauty and interesting subjects to shoot and study. It has always been such a great challenge to capture them in ways that are most satisfying to view. I now have to time to go both out into nature and wander our cities and villages.
Alicia Stemper at Town Hall Gallery
Town Hall Gallery: Is featuring photographs by Alicia Stemper. Form her artist statement: Although I always had a camera around my neck in high school and college, I did not explore photography as a career option. I studied English as an undergraduate and I earned my masters in social work. As a result, words were the vehicle I used to function in my career and to reflect on my observations about the world.
Mark Twain said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.” My partner gave me a digital DSLR camera on my birthday in 2010 and everything changed. I now want to use photography to reflect my observations and tell my stories. Light, color, patterns, and personality are what I try to capture and I especially love documenting Carrboro. As the photographer for the Carrboro Citizen for several years, I had a fantastic outlet to explore my passion and develop my skills. I call photography my “new lens on life” and I am excited to share it with others.
