Artist Statement by Anna Crawford
I have a passion for nature. The organic shapes, lines and texture; the intricate detail found in leaves, rocks, flowers and trees inspire me to find new ways to incorporate and emphasize these natural elements in my work. There are two ways I enjoy expressing this passion.
With watercolor I love using mineral pigments (called granulating pigments by the artists industry). When these pigments are watered down the granules separate from the rest of the pigment to settle, creating darker specks of color and an intriguing texture. I also love creating other textures, such as salt in wet pigment to achieve interesting starburst shapes, wax paper or plastic wrap, which add another interesting textured element.
With acrylic paintings, not only do I use the same methods with the salt, wax paper and plastic wrap as I do with watercolor, I also add a variety of acrylic gels and pastes to my surface or pigment to achieve the textures I’m looking for.
Just like walking in the woods or working in the garden, painting allows me to be who I am.
