Drawing & Giclées at Weaver Street Realty

Andy Silton
asilton@gmail.com
Andy is a retired money manager, who managed the public pension plan for the State of North Carolina. His art is derived from decades of doodling in his business notebooks. Three years ago, a close friend suggested that Andy buy some color pens and paper and try drawing. A year later another friend suggested that Andy try his hand at watercolor.

His drawings and paintings usually begin the same way. Andy gets an overwhelming urge to draw or paint without much of idea about the subject or form. He tries to get into the same mindset he had during business meetings and conference calls.

His work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Walter Magazine, and on CBS Sunday Morning. In 2012, selected pages from his businesses notebooks were displayed at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in an exhibit entitled “Meditations on Money Management.” In 2015, he also exhibited works at St. Philips for an exhibit entitled “Journeys.”

Janice Rieves, Multimedia Artist at Weaver Street Realty

Reception for artist Janice Rieves at Weaver Street Realty during the 2nd Friday ArtWalk.

Artist Statement: I am, among other things, a multimedia artist and professional gardener living on a bit of land in the semi wilds of Chatham County with my partner, Joe. I am happily and gratefully surrounded by a community of generous and creative souls. I've had an ongoing exploration and conversation with pattern, color and light that I find satisfaction expressing in glass mosaic. I find inspiration in nature's forms and flows, ancient symbols, sacred geometry, energy dynamics made visible, art and architecture. It is my joy to share my work with you. Follow Janice on Facebook at Janice Rieves Art.

Steve Shafer Photography

I love photography and most visual art. I enjoy capturing images that we don’t usually pay attention to around us. My favorite photographic subjects are people, architecture, nature, historic sites, details and texture. When I was growing up in Budapest, Hungary, my first experience with photography was in high school with a Leica 35mm film camera. Soon thereafter, I learned darkroom processing and that knowledge was helpful later on in my graphic design career. Most of my life I have been working with visual art in one form or another, and photography has always been a strong component. The advancements in the fields of digital photography and post-processing has enabled me to express my photographic artistry in ways that I have not experienced before and I want to share my view of the world around us. My work has been juried into exhibits at the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia, The Arts Center in Carrboro, the FRANK Gallery, The Chapel Hill Library, the Galloway Artist Collaborative and the Second Annual Open Studio Tour in Fearrington Village, North Carolina.

When I see art that is well done the accomplishment of the artist comes through. Discipline, practice and study are all evident. It is pleasing to look at. Some art though, seems to separate itself from just the well executed. There is magic in it. An unexpected line or color. A brushstroke that is rich and thick or skimmed across the canvas like frost. It almost can't be planned. It is intuitive and free flowing. It is what makes a nice and well done piece of art....captivating. This is what I strive for."

Landscape Artist John Wesley Vanderheyden at Weaver St Realty

Weaver St Realty Artist: JOHN WESLEY VANDERHEYDEN

About the Artist
I recently retired from an over 35 year career with Verizon Communications doing internal computer work for them. I chose to move to North Carolina from Washington, D.C. because of the natural beauty of the state. We have wonderful access to mountains and seashore here in the Piedmont. As a landscape painter I have more material than I can ever get to.
I work in 3 or 4 styles and landscapes are my prominent subject matter. Bright color combinations usually dominate my paintings. My scenes are from all over the United States with a lot of the Southwest Desert and Washington, D.C. I’ve done a lot of water studies and floral still-lifes. Why do people love looking at water? I think it has to do with the constant change between patterning and randomness. Where patterns meet chaos is a recurring theme of mine. Examples of this would be changing ripples in a river or light dappled maples in the fall. I self-published an art book in 2007. It is on google link: http://goo.gl/3fDj9

Farley Bernholz, Ginger Holler & Daphne McLeod
of The Eclectic Company

Farley Bernholz, Ginger Holler, and Daphne McLeod have been exploring and creating art together for 3 years; experimenting with watercolor, mixed media, art journaling, and more - inspiring each other to live a no-holds-barred creative life:

Farley Bernholz chooses lots of different materials to make her art. She uses children’s clothing, Mardi Gras masks, huge globs of acrylic paint, and sweet little watercolors. She creates framed paintings, butterflies who like to land on your lampshade/houseplants and mixed media collages that feature children’s dress-up clothes. Nothing is impossible….

Ginger Holler is a mixed media artist interested in expressing the connection between nature and spirit, inspired by the reuse and reimagining of discarded and new materials. She creates altered books, book tags, Wild Woman portraits, and whatever else jumps out at her from thrift shop rambling, dumpster diving, exploring nature, and gallery wandering.

Daphne McLeod is a watercolorist and alcohol ink artist who also works in acrylics, colored pencil, graphite, and pen and ink. If there’s a brightly colored mammal or bird out there, or even if there is NOT, Daphne will dress horses, pigs, cardinals, hummingbirds, and chickens up in bold and brilliant hues that jump off her palette. Watch out for the stampede.

Palette Knife Painting at Weaver St Realty

Palette Knife Painting by Karin Neuvirth

I am a palette knife painter currently living in Durham North Carolina. I was born and raised on a farm in Minnesota which is where I developed an appreciation for the outdoors. I know that colors impact our emotions. The vibrant color combinations I use in my work are meant to be uplifting and inspirational. I paint with a palette knife to create textural, energetic, and impressionistic paintings that speak to my own spontaneous yet restless nature. I want to create works that combat the negativity in the world and replace it with joy. My subjects are simple, but they are things that we should stop and pay attention to every day. We should take time to just feel the colors in the world around us. www.karinneuvirth.com

"I came into the tie dye business because my mom encouraged me to do it. I did not like it at first, because I was 9 and I did not care about tie dying. Later, I started to like tie dyeing because it's a beautiful work of art. I also like it because I get paid for selling the tie dyes I make. Now this is my first job! The tie dyes I make are socks. I came up with that idea because I thought socks look really plain. I’m now learning to make my shirts better so I hope you like them, and I hope to see you on February 12."

Carrboro's Mill Town Heritage

Steve Hessler paints representational landscapes in traditional oils on stretched canvas and gessoed panels. Much of his work is painted plein air, although he also paints from photographs in his studio. "As a self-taught artist, what appeals to me about outdoor painting is the opportunity to create quick, uncomplicated images of places about which I have strong feelings." Such places include the historic district of the Carrboro Mill Village, rural Orange County where he lives; and, the North Carolina coast, especially Topsail Island and Core Sound.

Specializing in acrylic paintings, he has exhibited in several locations on both coasts and is a frequent exhibitor in juried fine art shows.
While Joel tries to stay well-rounded in his subject matter and style, he find a primary theme in his work is contrast. Contrast in color, contrast in themes, contrast in order vs chaos. You will find these elements in his various series, especially Symphony of Trees; Portals, Perceptions & Visions, and Starbursts & Brainstorms series.

In his free time, Joel lives in Chapel Hill with his wife, Leela, and three daughters (4-year-old Carly, and identical 2-year-old twins Valerie and Isla).

Kellison recently resumed taking pictures after a 40 year hiatus: digital cameras and printers lured him back. His eclectic photos frequently depict the unplanned and often ironic beauty in the decay of man’s enterprises: huge or small, urban or rural, important or sheer folly – they are often funny and sometimes sad – but all are a part of our best efforts to achieve a meaningful life.

Steve Hessler Art Exhibition: Paintings of Carrboro and Orange County

Steve Hessler

Local oil painter, Steve Hessler, will be the featured artist at Weaver Street Realty during the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Second Friday ArtWalk on Friday, June 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  A Meet the Artist reception will be held at the realty’s 116 East Main Street location in downtown Carrboro. Refreshments will be provided.

For this show, Hessler has selected works depicting scenes of Carrboro millhouses and of southern Orange County. He also plans to display his portable field easel as part of the event.

Hessler is frequently seen painting in Carrboro’s historic district and along county roads near his home outside of town. His work can be viewed on his artist’s website at http://stevehessler.com.

“What appeals to me about ‘plein air’ or outdoor painting is the opportunity to create quick, impressionistic images of places that I love,” Hessler said. “I am especially drawn to the simple vernacular cottages found in the local countryside and in Carrboro.”

Hessler hopes that his paintings of these structures will promote more historic preservation. He carries this mission forward in his painting workshops and through his participation in the Textile Mill Heritage Initiative at Cooleemee.

Hessler’s work will be on display at Weaver Street Realty throughout the month of June. He is represented by the North Carolina Crafts Gallery (http://nccraftsgallery.com) in Carrboro and the Little Art Gallery (http://littleartgalleryandcraft.com) in Raleigh.
