Friends Making Funny Faces: Inkwash Portraits by Marie Rossettie at 109 E. Franklin Street

  • 109 East Franklin Street Chapel Hill, NC (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

With an impassioned eye and a background as a certified medical illustrator, Marie Rossettie meticulously portrays the human body - inside and out. Using a wide variety of media, from carbon dusting to encaustics to Photoshop, her work maintains a common thread of near-photographic precision suffused with a heartfelt appreciation for the quirks and flaws that make us each unique. Marie cleanly and accurately recreates the goriest of scenes for medical journals, magazines, surgical how-tos, patient education, and legal cases.

For her series "Friends Making Funny Faces," Marie intentionally veered from the severity of her professional work in both form and function. These portraits capture her subjects at their silliest using cheap and simple materials - brushes, ink, newsprint, wallpaper paste - to convey a sense of immediacy, intimacy, and fleeting fun. Though the process revels in its rawness Marie's attention to detail and patience remains, evidenced by the glint of an eye, the strands of hair, the patterns on tongues. In collection, these portraits provide a glimpse of humanity every bit as informative and true as her medical illustrations.

Marie’s work will be on display at 109 East Franklin Street (the old Ackland Art Museum Store) throughout the weekend. All are welcome to an opening reception on Friday, May 10 from 6:00-9:00. The artist herself will hold a talk and demonstration on Saturday, May 11 at 3:00.

February Visual Artist: Michael McCue at Caffe Driade

Local artist and art educator Michael McCue will be showcasing several paintings that explore the balance of realistic subject matter but unconventional color and abstraction.

Born and raised in Long Island, New York, McCue is a new North Carolinian after relocating to pursue his dream of becoming an elementary art teacher. His paintings began with a conceptual series of self-portraits breaking into puzzle pieces to later evolve into more painterly, whimsical, color theory inspired works.

McCue often draws inspiration from the enthusiasm and curiosity of his elementary age students and creates paintings that he finds others would enjoy creating too. He feels that the teaching of art is the teaching of life in many aspects which enhances the idea that all artists see the world differently.

Kristina Keeter Coffee Tree Series at Caffe Driade

Interdisciplinary artist Kristina Keeter uses ordinary materials as both inspiration and subject matter for her surreal images. In their abstraction, her works prompt us to observe and appreciate the ephemeral beauty of overlooked “everyday” things such as used coffee filters, food compost, and paper scraps. By repositioning and reimagining their compositions, she elevates the status of these found objects and allows the viewer to dream up new realities and meanings for them.

Her Coffee Tree series will be on view for the full month of December at Caffe Driade during regular open hours.

Photography Exhibit About Coffee at Caffe Driade

"A Nose For Coffee”
Exhibit at Caffé Driade
July 1 – July 31: Art Walk July 8

“Coffee Shop…” The mere words conjure up iconic images. You know them: people clambering for their first cup of the day; designer lattes; dollar bills overflowing their tip bowl; dogs on the patio snarfing up crumbs or an entire unattended croissant; some people deep in conversation and others head-down in their devices.

Everyone’s excited about going to the coffee shop!

“A Nose For Coffee” is a photography exhibit by Jonathan Bloom that captures a wide array of amusing café scenes. Jonathan is a TV news reporter and photojournalist for ABC-7 News in San Francisco, California. He graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 2000.

When Jonathan isn’t running to the scene of a story or going on a photo shoot, he can be found jogging in San Francisco’s Marina District or on the ski slopes of Lake Tahoe, by way of Philz’s, his favorite San Francisco coffee shop.

Jonathan grew up in Chapel Hill and took this collection of photos during visits back home.

“A Nose For Coffee” will open at Caffe Driade on July 1 and will run through the end of July. It will be one of the featured stops on Art Walk on July 8.

Event Description
Artist's statement
Gillian Fink

Inspiration comes when you least expect it. For Gillian, a young woman with intellectual disabilities, it all started a little over ten years ago when she was working on a giant jigsaw puzzle of brightly colored tropical fish. As she worked the puzzle she thought she would like to make a painting of the parts that she liked. Her first painting of the jigsaw puzzle turned out as she had hoped. And so her journey began. She starts with finding paintings of her favorite artists. Picasso's Cubist period tops her list. Georgia O'Keefe's orchid paintings, van Gogh, DeChirico, the Impressionists. Other sources of inspiration are books and Disney animation. Her boundless curiosity keeps her searching for new images, resulting in ongoing composites that become the narratives in her paintings. After she finds the images on the Internet, she prints them out. She cuts out the sections she wants to use in her paintings and then by moving the pieces around she finds the right juxtaposition of images that establishes her composition. The process is similar to assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Outlining in black first for her overall layout, she is then able to add the bright colors of her palette. Bold and vivid colors of familiar images in surreal landscapes can resemble stained glass. Her passion and joy of painting is evident. She recently exhibited her paintings in the community art show at the Carrboro Art Center this past September and again in December. In addition to her painting, she is a fearless athlete. She also enjoys creating dance routines to some of her favorite musicals and movies.

Cat Moleski Acrylics at Caffé Driade

Cat Moleski Acrylics

Throughout the month of October, Caffé Driade will host a show of abstract acrylics by local artist, Cat Moleski. Moleski creates abstractions from snapshots of tree bark, stones in a creek bed, and other scenes of nature. Each painting is created through layers of paint designed to sit on top of each other as opposed to blending. Moleski uses pallet knives and scrapers rather than brushes to create the layered texture and broken swatches of color. Often, she’ll finish a painting with dabs of color to capture movement or score the surface of a wet painting to add dimension. With each painting she challenges herself to work within a chosen pallet and work the surface until the balance of form and color evoke a dynamic harmony.

Paintings by Artist Mira Sena at Caffe Driade

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read about my artwork. I was born in 1984 in New York, in 2010 I moved to Philadelphia, and in 2011 I moved to the RTP area of North Carolina. During my childhood I took advanced courses in the arts, photography, music, and digital media; placing in a variety of showings during my developmental period. In recent years I have had a previous showing at Coffee & Crepes in November 2013 in NC, and the LGBT Center of Raleigh in April 2015. Growing up overlooking the Hudson River, I have always found the simplistic beauty of nature while also appreciating the elegancy of minimalism. Though stylistically different than the modernists and surrealists, I have always felt an intrinsic pull toward their slight alterations of realism, and how they transform a known object into something beautiful and new.

My artistic vision is that art represents life in its many forms, I choose to create pieces that reflect growth and change with focus on a quiet optimism and a statement of existence with everything else stripped away. In this showing, my media of choice is modified acrylics, by treating the acrylics as I would treat watercolors to create an airy lightness to my pieces.

In this showing, the pieces tie into a naturalistic theme with emphasis on the raw strength and perseverance of life in its many forms of renewal.  http://www.pinterest.com/vanessasquest/art-by-mira-sena/

The Photography of Linda Kampel

March 1st-31st 2015
Artist’s Reception Friday March 13th 6-9 pm

Through The Light

I’ve always loved the unexpected effect that natural light has on the things around me. When I look through the viewfinder, the contrast between sun and shadows brings the personality of trees, plants, and even a weathered pile of sawmill lumber alive for me.

Sunlight overcast by fog -- or the sun’s full force – sometimes allows me to create color photographs that appear to be black and white, but a closer look reveals a small patch of moss, a random autumn leaf, or hidden sprigs of green grass. These photographs are my way of speaking without saying a word, and I hope they bring out the unique characteristics of the trees, plants, and animals that inspire me.
