Drawn Together at Frank Gallery

Drawing is often seen as the preparation for a masterpiece – the precursor to a painting or formulation for a sculpture. However, the artists presented at FRANK Gallery in November and December are “drawn together” through the skill, beauty and mystery of their mixed media drawings and ceramics. Drawn Together features KiKi Farish and Jean LeCluyse, two highly skilled artists who elevate the art of drawing to create mesmerizing compositions full of intricate details and symbolism. Joined by mixed media ceramicist Aggie Zed, who creates fantastical creatures through the use of three dimensional lines and clay sculptures.

A chef has much to consider, and now more than ever, the origin of the food is just as interesting as the quality of the ingredients. Local heirloom tomatoes and neighborhood goat cheeses flourish in our best and favorite restaurants. Now, they are also being served on handmade pottery, with wood ash glazes or custom designs that take the visual value of the meal even further beyond the basics, and creates a celebration of both the food and presentation.

FRANK gallery presents the dinnerware and serving pieces designed by seven famed regional potters, created for great chefs throughout the Southeast, and used for dining in innovative restaurants across the region. These executive chefs often go to the studio to understand how the pottery is designed, and specifically how those pieces can best showcase the art of fine dining.

Opening Reception: The Elegant Line and Consignor Invitational at FRANK Gallery

“One must always search for the desire of the line, where it wishes to enter or where to die away." - Henri Matisse

Humbly and respectfully, there is always the search for that elusive, elegant line. The authentic line that contains integrity and grace. What is its imposing width or gossamer thinness? Its angle and curve? Its placement on a surface or its fluidity in space? And where does the line end, after-all? The line is worked until it says to leave it be. FRANK presents “The Elegant Line, featuring Sudie Rakusin and Susan Filley. Rakusin celebrates line in her mixed-media abstract works; Filley creates graceful forms in clay.

Also featured in July, six artists who share a sense of whimsy and color in their individual bodies of work. The artists whose work will be showcased at FRANK this month include ceramicists Carmen Elliott and Cathy Kiffney, textile artist Elaine O’Neil, painters Henryk Fantazos, Anne Gregory and Rosie Thompson, and jeweler Rebecca Neigher. These Triangle based artists share some line, color and stylistic qualities, but overall were chosen as exceptional examples of the rich local artistic community. Each artist will be presenting a small body of work, showcasing their personal points of view and distinct, elevated level of skill and creativity.

Local Color at FRANK Gallery

Local Color at FRANK Gallery

Local Color

Color. There is no one way to use it. Simply through color, an artist can evoke strong emotions and create deep meaning in their work. On a color wheel, opposing colors are considered complementary. In a painting, neighboring colors often energize one another. In a work of art, a single color can tell a profound story, many colors together can make a powerful statement. In a sense it is a community of individuals working in harmony, not unlike our own.

FRANK gallery is pleased to present Local Color, an exhibition showcasing our diverse range of work by our talented community of artists. Each piece has been chosen based on one of the most basic concepts of artmaking – color. This group show features painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, woodwork, and more, by our renowned collective of local and regional artists. Based on the theme of color, we will not only be presenting a range of works, styles, and prices, but will be creating a visual masterpiece curated by our outstanding FRANK Curatorial Committee.

Natural Forces

Julie Brooks
Nerys Levy
Carolyn Rugen

FRANK’s current featured exhibition looks at the grandness of nature, both in the immense landscapes that surround us, and the microscopic elements that are the building blocks of all things living. Painters Nerys Levy and Carolyn Rugen look to the beauty in their surroundings for inspiration. Levy working on site during her travels, capturing the greenery and enormity of the British countryside. Rugen working locally, painting the serene views from the windows of her home in the heart of Chapel Hill. In addition, jeweler Julie Brooks creates simple graphite drawings on her “sugar coated” enamel surfaces. These drawings highlight DNA structures, viruses, and cells, and the addition of hints of gold and stones highlights these components as precious jewels.

View from the Edge

Paintings by Carroll Lassiter

Carroll Lassiter’s landscapes explore the open spaces and rural scenery of Central and Eastern North Carolina, capturing the charm that can be found on back highways and farmland belonging to past generations. With so much scrutiny and tension mounting around our state as politics and strong partisan views hold strong to our attention this season, it is easy to forget the incredible beauty, rich agricultural history, and cultural significance that North Carolina possesses.

Writer & Photographer at FRANK Gallery

Paintings, Photographs, Friendship

The uncertain boundary that separates writers and artists gains a special emphasis in Paintings, Photographs, Friendship - an exciting new show coming to FRANK Gallery this September. This very special, month long exhibition features the painting and photography of two good friends who are each in their own way, blurring the boundary of writer and artist - Clyde Edgerton and John Rosenthal.

Paintings, Photographs, Friendship represents the playful tension between friendship and art. “I met Clyde,” Rosenthal said, “on the day that Raney was published, over thirty years ago. Since then I’ve read everything he’s written. He’s a sly funny writer who is unafraid of darkness. If you’re an artist yourself, he’s a good friend to have. Always out there making something good happen—books, music, songs, paintings. We need to be inspired by our friends.”

FRANK will be presenting John Rosenthal’s “Museum Studies” series and Clyde Edgerton’s paintings—including renderings of his favorite Rosenthal photographs.

Abstract Painter & Furniture Maker Exhibitions at FRANK Gallery

"Natural Lines" and "Against the Wall"

We are very pleased to present two local favorites this September at FRANK. Abstract painter Katherine Armacost, and modern furniture maker Jim Oleson will present their latest bodies of work in overlapping exhibitions.

Armacost’s Against the Wall will feature a new body of work just for FRANK Gallery. She is an award winning, nationally exhibition and internationally collected artist who has been exhibiting her work for nearly three decades throughout the US, including solo and group shows in North Carolina, New York, and California. Armacost’s work is inspired by nature and her surroundings, and is rooted in expressing feelings that can’t be put into words. Rarely does she begin with a fixed idea, but allows her brush to have a dialogue with the piece to bring it to life. Her final pieces range in size and are each incredibly stunning, highly textural abstract paintings.

Natural Lines exhibition will showcase Oleson’s handcrafted, functional furniture. Oleson has a rich family tradition of woodworking, one that he found to be an outlet for his own creative expression. His woodwork is contemporary and highly influenced by some of the biggest names in the medium, including Michael Fortune and George Nakashima. Oleson describes his work as function meets natural forms, and he handpicks each piece of wood for the project, focusing on its inherent colors and patterns to create a one of a kind piece that speaks to the wood itself. His work ranges from wall mounted mirrors, to tables, cabinets and more.

Abstract Territory

Lolette Guthrie and Sandy Milroy will be joining together for a stunning exhibition of abstract pieces that all carry a suggestion of nature and views of the earth. Guthrie draws from memory and experience in creating her work, striving to capture the ephemeral nature of light and atmosphere. This series is a reflection of her time on Ocracoke, NC based on the geometry of the island. Milroy begins with the materials and builds a composition with the design elements of primarily geometric rectangles, squares, and stripes of various visual weights, going for an overall asymmetrical balance.
