"What's Not Digital?" Paintings by Durham artist, Maria Falbo at North Carolina Crafts Gallery

This collection of paintings explores Falbo's analog1 experience and its digital2 representation in a broad and metaphorical sense. What’s not digital? asks what is lost or gained when experience is represented, reconstructed, and remembered digitally.

Digitizing requires sampling the original content according to some rule (whose rule?). Digitizing requires leaving out or changing a good bit of the original content (who chooses what to leave out?). Digitizing is a way of systematically losing information (forgetting, omitting, editing) – so that the original content is often lost forever and what remains is a version of reality.

1 Analog - of, relating to, or being a mechanism in which data is represented by continuously variable physical quantities. Anything that happens on a continuous spectrum requires an infinite number of infinitesimal pieces of information to record.

2 Digital - relating to or being a mechanism in which data is represented in discrete numerical form (especially 0 and 1). Digitizing chunks the continuous into a finite number of same-sized, discrete units.

Opening Reception for Artist Michelle Davis Peteliniz

"Ancestral Odes" by Michelle Davis Petelinz on exhibit at North Carolina Crafts Gallery from October 1-31. Meet the artist and join us for a reception during the 2nd Friday Artwalk. Friday, October 14th from 6-9pm.

Artists Statement: "As I create my mixed media work, I am irresistibly drawn to incorporate symbols, patterns, textures and colors found in African and Native American cultures, which are my heritage. My art-to-wear and wall pieces often feature original, hand cut stamps; gelatin prints; painted papers; and polymer clay. Natural elements of bamboo, wood, feathers, shells, and bone beads imbue my wall hangings with strong tribal connections.

I often work in a series, visually exploring the cultural significance of decoration and symbology. Influences include the Ndebele painted houses of South Africa; Korhogo cloth patterns from the Ivory Coast; Ghanaian gold weights; Bogolan mud cloth from Mali; and patterns used in Ethiopian body painting. My goal is to interpret these visual elements so they will resonate with the viewer as objects at once unusual and familiar; evoking ancestral and contemporary design; and speaking across cultures to the deep well of the universal."

A common theme in my work is birds. I'm very connected to their songs morning into evening and enjoy their sonorous backdrop to life. "My passion is for the natural world, and I am especially drawn to water, rocks and trees in all their amazing variety. I find the medium that best conveys these wonders is sculptural acrylics. I begin with a charcoal sketch then build up the surface with modeling paste and gels, emphasizing the contrast in texture that I observe. I then apply the color to capture the richness of detail and the play of light on the surfaces. My landscapes and seascapes are inspired by my travels and enhanced by my imagination."
